Climate change Climate change means weather patterns are shifting. It means unexpected droughts, floods, forest fires, hurricanes, heat waves, melting glaciers and rising sea levels. It also means irreversible changes in temperature and rainfall, so all life will need to adapt. Poor people will be affected most. Almost all scientists and politicians are convinced this is because the atmosphere is warming due to the build-up of carbon dioxide in the air from the fuel we burn. Planes and cars are a major part of the problem, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and causing climate change. Climate Stewards offers hope Amid all the pessimism on global warming, Climate Stewards is a new initiative offering hope. It enables every concerned individual and organisation to begin to undo the damage that our lifestyles impose on the environment we share with our neighbours around the world. It is too late to stop climate change, but we can act now to slow down the process and give the world time to adapt. Climate Stewards is both a practical response and a pointer to a new way of living. It has been set up by A Rocha, an international nature conservation organisation with a Christian basis operating in 16 countries. Climate Stewards plants new forests to capture airborne carbon and lock it up as wood, helping to reverse the damage done by our lifestyles. A Rocha schemes in Ghana and Kenya encourage biodiversity and species conservation, so the environment wins twice. They always involve the local community, so benefiting local people too. How to help We can all make small lifestyle changes to reduce our energy use. Small changes by lots of people will have a big impact Take a look at our website to find out more Act now on www.climatestewards.org.uk travel calculator to calculate and make a payment to reverse the carbon damage of your unavoidable travel. |
